Cleveland OH – After being canceled in 2013 (due to a minor disagreement in DC), the sounds of piston and jet engines returned to the Cleveland National Airshow. The 2014 edition of the Cleveland National Airshow thrilled airshow fans who flocked to the Burke Lakefront Airport over this past Labor Day weekend.
Organizers assembled a lineup that did not disappoint. Among the acts, the show featured routines from John Klatt – Air National Guard Power Aerobatics, Melissa & Rex Pemberton, Skip Stewart – Gyroscopic Aerobatics, Julie Clark in the Juice Plus T-34 Mentor and the mind boggling Flying Sasquatch Jet Waco. On the jet front, the show featured the Nalls Aviation British Sea Harrier, the L-39 Albatross and Shockwave the Jet Truck (who knew a truck could be so explosively entertaining). The US Army Golden Knights graced the show with their presence and the US Navy Blue Angels brought the crowds to their feet.
Vintage war birds were represented by the TBM Avenger, B-25 Yankee Warrior and the B-17 Yankee Lady. The effects of the sequester were still felt with the lack military aircraft on static display, but thanks to United Airlines and the Royal Canadian Air Force there was plenty to see.
This airshow was extremely well organized. There were plenty of booths, merchandise and food vendors to keep visitors busy before, during and after the show.
The Burke Lakefront Airport is the ideal location for an airshow. Lake Erie serves as the back drop and photographers get the added bonus of having the sun at their backs. There is even a spot favored by locals. “The Hill” sits just outside the grounds and offers an awesome unobstructed view of the airshow.
If a grade had to be given, The Cleveland National Airshow gets high marks.
