Duxford, UK — A veteran United States airman went back in time to be reunited with a famous warplane – which he last few 70 years ago.
During the Second World War, Huie Lamb Jr was a P-51 Mustang pilot, amassing more than 200 hours of combat flying.
The Imperial War Museum at Duxford has been carrying out conservation work on a Mustang, which it aims to put on show in 2016. Lt Col Lamb was based at Duxford from August 1944 until the end of the war, and he flew more than 60 missions in his Mustang, known as Etta Jeanne II, destroying five enemy aircraft.
He has detailed memories and photographs of his time at the RAF station, where he served with 82nd Fighter Squadron, 78th Fighter Group, and has been helping the IWM’s conservation experts working on the museum’s Mustang.
When it goes on show, the plane will have livery that matches Etta Jeanne II, and Lt Col Lamb’s story will be linked to the display.
