The Lone Star Flight Museum officially broke ground on its $35 million facility Ellington Airport Monday morning.
Scheduled to open in February, 2017 to coincide with Houston’s hosting of Super Bowl LI, the museum is currently located in Galveston.
“We felt it important to protect our collection by moving the museum further inland,” said Scott Rozzell, chair of the board of directors of the Lone Star Flight Museum.
The Galveston facility had been affected by Hurricane Ike and Ellington was chosen as the new site location for historical and logistic purposes.
“Ellington is much more than just a former Air Force base and home to NASA’s flight operations,” Rozzell said. “It is a vibrant aerospace hub.”
The 130,000 square foot museum will house interactive and education exhibits with an emphasis on science, technology engineering and math concepts relating to aviation. The museum will also serve as a tool to explore Texas aviation history.
Rod Paige, former United States Secretary of Education Dr. Rod Paige spoke and a co-chair of the Lone Star Flight Museum Education Center, spoke of how he fell in love with aviation growing up in a small town of Mississippi and the importance of inspiring future generations.
