Norfolk, UK — Fighter ace Douglas Bader was stationed there, it served a crucial role during conflicts such as the Battle of Britain and the Iraq war and has been home to aircraft such as Hawker Hurricanes and Jaguars. And now the remarkable history of RAF Coltishall could be told in a new museum – in what used to be the control tower at the former air base.

Discussions are taking place between the former air base’s owner, Norfolk County Council, and a number of individuals over the creation of a charitable heritage trust which would run the museum.

The county council, which paid £4m for the base in 2013, has re-branded it as Scottow Enterprise Park and is negotiating terms over leasing buildings.

Tim Edmunds, development manager of Scottow Enterprise Park, said: “It is hoped a museum and learning centre can be created to operate from the most iconic historic buildings, like the former air traffic control complex.” He added, that if the project went ahead, artefacts and information about the former air base would be available for the public, schools, youth groups and academics, under the stewardship of members of the Spirit of Coltishall Association.
