An immaculately restored Spitfire Mk. I which is being sold for up to £2.5million later this summer is being unveiled today at the Imperial War Museum in Duxford.

The unique piece of Second World War British history, which helped to save Britain in 1940 and contributed significantly to winning the six-year conflict, is on display ahead of its sale at Christie’s on July 9 to benefit charitable causes.

It is expected to fetch between £1.5- £2.5 million.

Spitfire Mk. I
A Spitfire Mk Ia of 602 Squadron in early 1940. A de Havilland 3 blade propeller unit is fitted, along with a “blown” canopy and the laminated bulletproof windscreen and later aerial mast. The brass plate below the external starter plug can be seen on the side engine cowling.
