Masters of the Air is a ten-episode mini-series which forms the third instalment in their trilogy after Band of Brothers and Pacific. This time the story focuses on the American daylight bomber raids over occupied territory, launched from Norfolk and Suffolk.
During the war, 30,000 Americans were based in the Grantham area in preparation for D-Day, and the training of US fighter pilots top guard bombing raids took place at Goxhill (8th USAAF) in the north of the county.
The 9th USAAF’s D-Day advance party of 20 Dakotas took off from North Witham on June 5, 1944 carrying paratroopers of the 101st & 82nd Airborne Division into Normandy.
And scenes for the 1990 film Memphis Belle, all about the 25th and final mission at a B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, were shot at the former RAF Binbrook.
