The Peggy and Steve Fossett Foundation has issued a $1,000,000 challenge grant to the Salina Airport Authority to help raise funds for the Wings Over Salina Museum and Aviation Experience project.
Salina Regional Airport is the site of two of Steve Fossett’s greatest triumphs, the start and finish point for the late adventurer and record setter’s extraordinary Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer round the world flight – the world’s first ever solo, non-stop and non-refueled around the world airplane flight (22,936 miles in 67 hours 1 minute from 28 February – 3 March 2005) and the aviator and aircraft’s even longer non-stop flight of 14-17 March 2006 of 25,294 miles, setting a new (and still standing) ‘absolute distance over a closed circuit’ world record.
The $1M challenge grant has been earmarked to match cash and cash equivalent contributions to the Wings Over Salina Museum and Aviation Experience project. Donations are being accepted through the Greater Salina Community Foundation.
