RED HOOK, NY —  A fire Thursday afternoon at the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome in the town of Red Hook destroyed a gift shop near the runway used for air shows, authorities said.

The Red Hook Fire Company was dispatched at 5:11 p.m. Within minutes, Fire Chief Rich Hilbrandt arrived to find the building fully engulfed in flames.

Hilbrandt said employees who were at the Aerodrome when the fire started were able to quickly remove vintage airplanes and automobiles from a hangar adjacent to the gift shop.

The fire was under control within 20 to 30 minutes, although firefighters remained at the scene well into the evening dousing hot spots.

Between 35 and 40 firefighters were on the scene, along with tanker trucks from Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Hillside, and Tivoli, due to the limited water supply at the Aerodrome.
