KEYSTONE HEIGHTS, FLORIDA USA – After threeand ahalf years of holding out and waiting, a Clay County museum is getting its wish.
The Wings of Dreams Aviation Museum in Keystone Heights took delivery of a World War II era Douglas C-47 on Jan. 23, 2013.
Donated to the museum by the Lee County Mosquito Control District, the museum was selected from a pool of aviation museums from around the country to receive one of the planes.
The C-47 is best known as the aircraft that dropped paratroopers behind enemy lines during the D-Day Normandy Invasion in WW II.
Plans call for restoring the plane to its earlier glory. The museum will paint the plane in a U.S. Army Air Corps color scheme with D-Day Invasion stripes.
In addition to being on display, the plan is to keep the plane in a flyable condition and use the aircraft for rides and D-Day reenactment flights. Wings of Dreams will conduct tours of the inside of the aircraft and use it to inspire an interest in WWII history. For museum times and other information, visit www.wingsofdreams.org.
