The Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum is no stranger to young visitors learning about aerospace and aviation within its doors, but this fall will provide a new opportunity for about 100 youth.

The museum is opening the Wings Aerospace Academy, an online charter school for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders that will be the first of its kind in the Denver area.

The museum will partner with Elevate Academy, an online school, and give the students an opportunity to work on aerospace and aviation projects with teachers and nearly 100 qualified volunteers at the museum. The school will expand by one grade each year until it serves grades six through 12.

“It’s going to be really unique and powerful to a number of kids and families,” said Brian Bissell, board chairman for Elevate Academy, a subsidiary of the online charter group ColoradoEd.

The students will do the majority of their classwork at home on the Internet and spend approximately two days per week at the museum working on various projects. Students are assigned a teacher online who they can speak with online and on video chats. The students will also meet as a class once a week in person. The second day at the museum will be individually scheduled.

“We think this is a context to keep them interested,” said Robert Stannard, director of education for Wings Over the Rockies.
