Volunteers polish the Yankee Air Museum’s WWII-era B-25 medium bomber “Yankee Warrior” during the 2014 Bomber Buffing party. This year’s 20th annual project is Saturday at the museum at Willow Run Airport.

This year’s project from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hangar 1, Bay 8, will help prepare the museum’s aircraft for 2015, which is the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. It’s also the 70th birthday of the “Yankee Lady,” which was delivered to the United States Army Air Forces on July 16, 1945.

Saturday’s event also is bigger than usual because the C-47 Skytrain “Yankee Doodle Dandy” also will be polished to a high shine as the planes prepare for a new flying and air show season now that winter inspections and maintenance are complete.

There is no cost to participate. Assisting the event, a Hungry Howie’s Pizza luncheon will be served for everyone. People are encouraged to bring plenty of clean, soft rags. Mothers Polishes, Waxes and Cleaners Inc. has donated aluminum polish for people to use.
